Follow the yellow brick road

We’ve been overdue for an October themed outfit, not so much because we couldn’t think of anything. Actually, our dog Molly has been preparing for this since she’s been growing out her hair since February. We’ve had our October themed outfit planned several months back, but this time we had the whole family in mind. We’ve been excited for this day and I would spend days thinking about how I would construct the costumes (sadly yes, this is what goes on in my head during my downtime).

Let me first post a throwback from last year:

Last year’s costume was relatively easy as we already had our existing costumes and only needed to add baby Kyla’s outfit.  And when I say “relatively easy” it’s because of this: This year, I have to think of how to make each one of our costumes, while also including the dogs. So, the theme is Wizard of Oz! We still have to finish making tinman costume, but so far,  here it is:

Introducing Toto, formerly known as Chewy:

And when I say “formerly known as Chewy”, this is Chewy before:

Animal lovers and PETA members, don’t worry! His fur was dyed by a purportedly safe dog hair spray specifically made for pets called PetPaint.

Introducing our lion who was, and probably still is (in real life) searching for courage, Molly:

Molly’s hair was trimmed to have a lion’s mane and tail exclusively for this occasion. Her ears go well to add to the lion look.

Next, is Tinman, whose costume is incomplete and whose role will be played by daddy Lawrence (not by me as pictured):

Originally, I was thinking of making Tinman’s costume out of silver pleather, but when I went to Joann’s fabric store, someone else had Tinman’s costume in mind and bought all the silver pleather! Luckily, this prompted me to walk around the store, where I came up with the alternate idea of making the costume out of duct tape and poster board. The gloves were dishwashing gloves sprayed silver and the hat, well, it was a funnel. Duct tape + poster board >>> Silver pleather.

The next character is played by yours truly…me! Scarecrow’s costume was homemade with the exception of the $1 brown sweatpants I found at the thrift store. Oh and the boots? They were Lawrence’s. He didn’t know I used them (and stuffed hay in them) for this picture. 🙂

Finally, the leading lady, Kyla, who will be Dorothy for Halloween this year:

Kyla’s Dorothy dress was home made and her shoes are Tom’s! I tried to make her dress as close to the original as possible with the criss cross patterns at the seams and with correct button placement and all.

We have yet to have a family/cast photo with all of us in it together. I’m still finishing up Lawrence’s tinman costume, but stay tuned! Hopefully everyone will cooperate and/or some sort of photo voodoo magic will work so that all the characters can come together as one and skip down the yellow brick road!

August themed lemonade stand pictures

August was sort of a hard month to think of a theme for. There are no big holidays that I know of. No celebrations really. I’ve done beach pictures of Kyla. What summer thing can I do? I started to question whether I could pull off continuing this monthly themed photo thing I committed myself for. I turned to Dr. Google to answer my questions…and then here it is, a cute DIY wood pallet lemonade stand:

So then, I decided just that–this month’s theme will be a lemonade stand photo! Perfect for the summer. I’ve never built anything on my own but I was determined to. I picked up a weathered wood pallet, dismantled it, measured and sawed the pieces, built the frame, nailed the pieces together, made a sign, and whallahhhh, Kyla’s lemonade stand:

I proceeded to make her a little apron with vintage lace trimming to go with the theme:

And so last night, somehow Kyla, and our two dogs Molly and Chewy cooperated and these are the results of August’s themed Lemonade Stand photos. Enjoy!

June’s themed outfit

Every month so far of Kyla’s life, we’ve been taking monthly pictures of her. After she turned 1, Lawrence wanted to continue taking monthly pictures but I was a little hesitant. How much do toddlers really change over time? Besides us, who will really care about these pictures? Can we really commit to remembering to take pictures every month for another year? We both work full time, when will I have time to do this?

But one idea kept me interested: I can take themed pictures of her every month!

I only started to sew a few months after Kyla was born. It started with making little bows (because I was too cheap to buy $10 bows at the store), then making homemade dresses. When Halloween came, we decided to dress up as a family to our friend AJ and Muoi’s Costume-themed wedding. Two years prior, Lawrence and I dressed as ghost busters and we wanted to re-use our costumes. This past year, marshmallow man had a baby:

And then from there, I took off. I made Kyla a baby white coat using one of Lawrence’s old dress shirts for Pharmacy Week:

Then as Thanksgiving rolled around the corner, this happened:

So when Lawrence insisted we continue taking monthly pictures after her 1st birthday, I decided that we will do it…but we will do it with a monthly theme. Yes. Every month this year, we will take themed pictures of Kyla whether or not she’s up for it. So then, this happened:

February:

March:

April:

and May, by far our favorite yet. It’s our little Cinco de Mayo mariachi girl:

I think it’s pretty hard to top off last month’s themed outfit. There isn’t too much going on for June except, the wonderful Father’s day, a day Lawrence whole-heartedly deserves. This month will be matching father-daughter outfits. Here’s Kyla’s homemade shirt-dress and matching bow ties:

So far we are 5 for 5 with this monthly themed picture process. As the year gets busier, hopefully we can keep up with what we signed ourselves up for!
